Wool, silk and cotton come together with paper, wax, metal and bamboo to give life to real sculptures that stand up in the rooms of the Museo del Tessuto in Prato.
The Contemporary Chinese Fiber Art Exhibition, which runs until 27 September, tells the story of oriental textile art in a single, unmissable, event in Italy.
There are thirty works on show, which reflect the 20 best institutes and art schools in China, and bear witness to the extraordinary progress that the genre has experienced in recent years. The outstanding artists on show in Prato have taken part in various editions of the International Tapestry Biennials, from Lausanne to Beijing, the world's top event of its type.
Not just beautiful weaves, but three-dimensional sculptures that wave around in the space like light veils
It is not traditional women's wear from China that is on display, but real sculptures. Some come down from on high like light veils that float in space, others hang like tapestries or canvases that decorate the walls of the museum.
The exhibition is part of the Chinese government's international cultural exchange programme, which is run by the Ministry of Culture. A world tour that has already visited ten countries, including the United States, Brazil, Australia, Europe and Mexico.
“We are happy to be able to participate in this tour, which has been introducing oriental textile art to the world for several years now,” confirms the president of the Museo del Tessuto Foundation, Francesco Marini.
“We believe that this is an opportunity to bring the local Chinese community closer to our activities and to realise that art is a great way of promotion and cooperation between China and Italy.”
